An old photograph can change the way you see a street you already know. A familiar building sits in a different setting; a shopfront or a passing figure draws your attention. Historic Chișinău interests me in precisely that way. Photographs and postcards make the city’s past more tangible, and my collection on Bessarabica reflects that interest.
Beyond the building
The subject of an image may be a landmark, but its surroundings often tell another story. Street layouts, signs, storefronts, and people going about their day reveal details of a city that are easy to overlook in a broad historical account.
An earlier view of a familiar place makes me wonder what changed, what survived, and how people used the space. These images help me notice more of the city when I return to it.

Supporting Old Chișinău
I support Old Chișinău and am grateful to have had the opportunity to contribute to the project. I admire the care its team brings to documenting the city’s past and making that history accessible.
An archive’s value comes from more than the number of images it holds. Identifying a place, adding context, and organizing the material allow a photograph to become a source someone else can use. I appreciate the knowledge and care that go into that work.
A collection others can explore
My collection of historic photographs and postcards is on Bessarabica. The contributor page brings these images together in a place where other people can browse and study them.
Someone else may recognize a building, remember a street, or understand a detail I have missed. I like the possibility that an image in the collection might help another person see something about Chișinău more clearly. That is what makes having it available online worthwhile.
